A number of the folks who led the French Revolution survived the Revolution, only to get guillotined by the Revolutionary Government for being insufficiently revolutionary. A number of Bolsheviks ended up getting executed or assassinated as "enemies of the people" under Lenin. Spain under Franco? China under Mao? Same deal. Heck, take your pick of ( Read more... )

What about people who helped found new religious sects, then were kicked out or otherwise punished for being insufficiently pious? Unfortunately, no specific examples leap to mind just now (it's still early), but I think we're dealing with similar phenomena.
