You know they're training those things to hunt for land mines.

Oh God, that's terrible. I do not really care for the rat, but I do not really feel comfortable with sending an animal to its demise...especially being blown to pieces. Why can't we just let the guy do what he does...except in Iraq?

Well, they're not heavy enough to detonate the mines and they're trained to sniff out the chemicals in them or something like that. And they're extremely motivated by food - hence the ability to train. I used to have pet rats and many of them are extremely motivated by affection/play as well - just like dogs that they use for bomb/drug sniffing.
