It's story time again

I worked a 12 hour shift yesterday. I hate them, but had a couple of patient encounters which were really pleasant or interesting, and reminded me why I went in to this business in the first place.

Apparently it's a long story )

Twelve hours in a row strikes me as a very long time to be making decisions in emergency cases. Is that a standard shift where you work?

Nice stories, thanks for sharing them.

I'm sorry, but this question actually made me laugh.

But it shouldn't, you know. Routine expectations of twelve-hour shifts is what SHOULD make you laugh.

Well, the ones who are still on duty after not sleeping for 36 hours, sort of make me laugh nervously... but as mentioned below, that's mostly the residents, not the attendings. You know, the residents, the ones who actually interact with patients? (I am not intending to disparage Tom, who is obviously a gem.)

Yes, all that is theoretically changing. I hear that it has improved slightly. In practice, not as much as one might hope because shorter shifts for the grunts just introduce different problems. But they'll get there. Maybe.

Anyway, that's why 12 being considered "long" actually made me laugh. 36 is "long".
