Does anyone else find it a little ironic in tables-turned terms that Lee is making a slow march of destruction to the northeast?

Yes, I played with "irony" as the right word, since in the last year there have been so many articles by failed linguists questioning its "meaning." ;)

Hadn't occurred to me; the locale is all wrong, I guess. Perhaps if Lee had marched in from the sea onto Washington...
