Character Name: Dr. Nusakan.
Character Series: SaGa Frontier
Character Age: OLD. B| Probably in the thousands. Looks...
idk. Mid-late 20s?
Background: Nusakan is a member of the mystic race in SaGa Frontier. As such, he's blessed with all the perks of the vampire-like race: extraordinary healing capabilities, agelessness, unearthly charm and beauty, not to mention magical power. Most mystics choose to remain in the Region of Chateau Aiguille, far away from the reach of most humans. Nusakan, on the other hand, makes his home in Koorong - one of the seedier Regions, but a mostly human-populated region nonetheless.
Why? Well, to begin with, the doctor is generally regarded as 'creepy', even by his fellow mystics. Each mystic has his or her own obsession, and Nusakan is obsessed with fear, death, disease and decay. Since mystics are essentially immortal, most of them don't understand why anyone, especially another of their own race, would ever be interested in such human afflictions, it evidently puts them off him automatically. Beyond this, it's (obviously) easier to find people suffering from ills related to his interests in the human realms - so, he set up an office in Koorong.
By some chance (or perhaps because IRPO - Inter-Regional Patrol Organization - was interested in keeping tabs on as many mystics as possible, especially those in human regions), Nusakan met and created a rapport with Fuse, the so-called “crazy investigator” of the force. Through him, he met the skeletal King Sei, who he employed for a time, and Silence, who he became the 'official' doctor to, as IRPO wanted to be sure their only mystic officer was afforded the best care possible.
Much of his time was spent alone, until someone came looking for the Hide Rune, which was hidden in the depths of Koorong's sewers. Then he would help them to obtain it, returning to his work thereafter. That was, until Meiling brought Riki, a monster looking for specific rings, to him, offering an exorbitant price to help cure a rich man's daughter of her disease. Intrigued, he agreed to help - and something kept him there once the deed was done.
When Riki had collected all of his rings and returned to the dying Region of Margmel, the doctor stayed to see its rebirth. After that rebirth started to 'unmake' the denizens that remained (as the rings granted Riki's wish - for Margmel to be reborn - very literally), he was the first to realize (and had, perhaps, realized beforehand) that Meiling was possessed by the Black Ring she wore. For reasons not very clearly defined - perhaps simply to see the beast Meiling turned into die - he helped Riki save her, only to head home. As his final act of kindness, he sealed away one of the rings Riki had collected to keep it away from human hands.
Personality: At his core, Nusakan is a scientist and a doctor, before almost anything else. While he does have some part of him that is emotional and humanlike, it's normally kept buried deep under his analytical interest. He will keep monsters as 'pets' - though they're more like guinea pigs - for as long as possible, showing no emotion when extracting the creature's natural poisons, or injecting new ones into them. The pursuit of how better to understand death and disease is, at least in most cases, his strongest motivation. So strong, in fact, that he has used himself as a test for several of the stronger poisons.
Being a mystic, and able to heal injuries quickly, he finds humans' reactions to pain and mortality absolutely fascinating. More specifically, he set up his entire doctor's office in the backstreets of Koorong - an unsettling placement to begin with - and populated it with rather antiquated material to draw the most unease from any human who came to visit him. A self-proclaimed master of human fear, he takes great pleasure in listening to, or watching, humans run screaming from his examination room.
Still, he does try to do what he can to help humans; as doctors go, outside of being skin-crawlingly obsessed with mortality, he's not really notably immoral. As he tells Fuse, the reason he toys with the fears of humans is because of the power of the human psyche on one's own health. If they're coming to him, either the problem is deeply mystical or, as is the case with visiting any doctor, they've already given up trust in their own bodies. He falls under the firm belief that trusting oneself can heal most normal ills, and so he subjects humans to a level of unease and fear that overwhelms their sense of trust in others. Fearing for their lives at the hands of the doctor, they actually subconsciously put faith in themselves - in running away from him, they're suddenly willing to trust their own bodies.
Living as long as he has, the doctor is rather perpetually disinterested in monotony. His experiments are an attempt at getting a reaction, either from the subject or from some poor unlucky soul coming to visit at just the wrong time. Any reaction at all is a very good reaction, and he tends to act rather droll when he doesn't think there'll be much to observe. Additionally, he lacks the concept of preventing harm to a subject, especially if they're possessed, or in the process of being possessed. For example, when he goes with Riki to help the rich man's daughter, he's very frank and precise in how to help her - even though it's simply telling them to avoid damaging the ring's physical manifestation until it actually possesses her (or rather, her shadow).
Like all mystics, he does absorb monsters - but, unlike most mystics, he does so to see their reaction to being absorbed. Each one, to him, has a unique end - a different amount of time it takes to absorb them, or a look on their faces - not to mention each individual piece of mystic equipment offers a different sort of death. He enjoys the death knells and surprise he can drag out of monsters, and the fact that he can record the data for later is a plus. Perhaps because Meiling actually turns into a monster when possessed by the Black Ring, Nusakan takes a much more active role in curing her of her possession. Being turned into such a strong monster, after all, he would be able to study each and every one of her (its, even) reactions as they happened.
Abilities: Nusakan has all the usual abilities of being a mystic - supernatural regeneration, immortality, charm, blue blood, fangs, and mystic magic. He also uses Shadow, Arcane and Space magics, and has access to his Mystic Wear (which provides healing) and mystic equipment - Sword, Glove and Boots.
