I whinge about work too much.

Just because I whinge about patients, does not mean that there is nothing wrong with you.
I you have symptoms that are concerning you, go get checked out by someone. Don't let my whininess put you off.

It also pays to get a second opinion, too.

I mentioned my concerns about the number of floaters in my eyes to two doctors who handwaved it away, despite my descriptions of how it badly it interfered with my eyesight in certain lighting conditions. A third GP finally gave me a referral to an opthalmologist who took one look in my eyes and sent me packing to Lions where they immediately started in on the eye stabbity to get it under control.

excellent point. and a vaguer cautionary tail. rabbit1080 September 1 2009, 06:48:20 UTC
I sooo should've got a 2nd opinion about my abdominal pains, too.
(All better now, but the delay in diagnosis meant that the required treatment was open-abdominal surgery, rather than the far less drastic options that would've been feasible earlier. D'oh.)

Ooo, what's up with your eyeballs? I have a blister inside my right eye which makes a permanent sunspot kind of thing. Except when the blister dies down. And you know, with a four month wait to see the ophthamologist, it has!

Have you got the same thing?

No, I've got intermediate uveitis, with an unspecified cause. Basically it's an autoimmume thing, my eyes fill up with accumulations of dead cells that I can see swimming in my vision, and infammation puts pressure on my retinas which can suffer progressive damage if left untreated. Treatment consists of sticking a long needle along the side of my eyeball and injecting steroids into the back of the eye socket. Either that, or injections straight into the eyeball.

TMI? ;)

As far as I've seen, you complain (quite rightly) about poor funding, stupid management, sociocultural issues and annoying/stupid/psychosomatic/needy patients. Nothing there to stop me getting checked out when I feel somthing is wrong. If anything, it reminds me to be patient with the medical profession because they have to deal with all this other stuff.

Few things excite me quite as much as your rise in hospital administration and process control. You give me hope that things might actually improve. Your kind of complaints are the ones that need to be made to protect our lives and your sanity.

Go forth and snark I say.

(And ditto ascetic_hedony who put it much better).
