Iron Man Rant
I really like Iron Man. I really do. He's one of my favorite superheroes, probably number two overall, behind Batman.
Anyway, they are making an Iron Man movie. Naturally, I'm a bit stoked about this. However, the news regarding the movie has been a bit disappointing.
First, they announced that Jon Favreau would be directing it. Personally, I do not like that selection. While he makes good movies and is a witty guy, I fear that he won't take Iron Man seriously. I fear that it'll be more of a play on the level of Fantastic Four, where they make a movie that tries to be cartoony, funny and serious all at once, and fails. I could be wrong and maybe this will launch a new avenue of success for Favereau, but I would wage against it.
Then, they announced that Terrance Howard would be in it. This I dig.
Next, they announced that this movie will be well over $100 million dollars in budget. While I can understand how this can occur and am accepting of it, this means that Favreau is going to be further run by a studio juggernaut - as this movie will cost more than Favreau's other three movies COMBINED - because they just do not hand $100 million over to a guy who has not had a major hit at that kind of budget.
Now, they announced who will play Iron Man. I was lobbying for one man to do it: Tom Cruise. Granted, that's kind of a homer pick, but think about it. Billionaire. Wants to do good. Has personal demons to deal with. They are in the same age range. He actually kind of looks like Tony Stark in the comics - sans cool mustache. Plus, he's a certifiable name that guarantees bank and you know with his important it would remain close to source material because he would be a producer. Instead, they cast Robert Downey Jr. which, though inspired, further fuels the notion that I think this movie is suffering an identity crisis.
