The Most Annoying Thing About Recent Movies
Recently, I have seen a trend that is emerging from Hollywood that is starting to bother me. Granted, not every movie has this problem, but it has been occurring more and more.
What is this problem?
A scene after the credits.
Usually, this scene has little, if any, significance, but it still feels that the moviegoer is being cheated. If I am paying $10 and the creative powers that be decide to throw on a scene at the end of the movie, should I not be alerted to it? Should I not deserve to see the movie in its entirety? I am not saying that every movie should be a "Director's Cut," but if you are throwing on a scene at the end, should the audience not know about it?
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Transformers, and Constantine have all done this recently. Do these scenes have barring on the film? In the case of the first two, yes, because it establishes that there could potentially be a sequel. With the last one, there really was no point.
So, who is to blame for this? Who started this most recent trend? Who can I hunt down and strip of their directing/film making rights?
The answer: The Wachowski Brothers.
Yes, the same men who created The Matrix.
Remember The Matrix Reloaded? I know that a lot of people try to forget it, but remember it? Remember how after the credits there was a preview for The Matrix Revolutions? I remember hearing about the potential for this scene the day before I went and saw it. Duncan, Emily, and I stayed until the eight and a half minutes of credits rolled by to see a ninety second glimpse of a movie to come in November.
Now, it is the standard for a blockbuster.
Since 2003, here are a list of the movies that have a scene after the credits: Finding Nemo, Kill Bill: Volume 2, Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Lost in Translation, Car, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Dawn of the Dead, Holes, K-Pax, X-Men: The Last Stand, Crank, Napoleon Dynamite, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny, Waiting..., Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Slither, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Tale, The Producers, Brother Bear, Talladega Nights: The Legend of Ricky Bobby, Madagascar, Constantine, Idiocracy, Fever Pitch, Reno 911! Miami, Mr. Bean's Holiday, Lucky You, Hostel, Blade: Trinity, You, Me, and Dupree, Stealth, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, Boogeyman, School of Rock, and Over the Hedge.
There are some other ones that are on the list, but, honestly, I have never heard of them.
To summarize the findings though, of the 117 movies on IMDB.com with the tag of "Surprise After the Credits," 56 of them (or roughly 48%) have come in the last four years alone. Considering this list has movies that date back from the 1980's, I would say that is a lot.
I would like to urge filmmakers to either do one of two things: One, if this scene needed to be in the final cut, please edit it in. Two, if you feel, "You know, I don't think I need this." and are willing to throw it aside, save it for the DVD and do not include it.
Summer Movie Preview Update:
Of the seven summer movies that I was "signed up for," I have seen three of the six that have been released. My desire to see Pirates 3 has waned, and I just have not gotten to Ocean's Thirteen or Ratatouille yet.
I have not seen any of the movies that I was "unsure" about, though I am curious about Live Free or Die Hard because it is running at 76% on Rotten Tomatoes.
I did not see Hostel II... That is a good thing.
I called "Biggest Bomb of the Summer." Though, that was the gimme section from this year.
It looks like I will be wrong with "Highest Grosser of the Summer" because Pirates 3 is already behind Spider-Man 3 and Shrek 3, with Transformers now rising fast.
As for Nancy Drew being my "sleeper" of the summer... I will now light myself on fire.
Called Georgia Rule sucking, but that seems like a gimme too.
Finally, Waitress was my lone Oscar Contender Pick and it is running at over 90%.
