Whew. I survived the holidays. And now, I finally update on life.
R. and I went to Las Vegas for Thanksgiving and had an absolute blast. It was my first time there and I was so excited. We stayed at Bally's which is pretty much mid-Strip. Neither of us gamble, so the games weren't much of a draw. We spent most of our time seeing all the various attractions and people watching. We saw a magic show at the Tropicana, the lions at the MGM grand, the Luxor and Mandalay Bay, and Siegfried and Roy's Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat. We spent an evening wandering around Caesar's Palace and took a gondola ride at the Venetian. We saw the Blue Man Group (meh) and the Cirque du Soleil show 'Mystere' (seriously awesome). And of course, my favorite, the fountains at the Bellagio. I have no idea why, but I'm completely obsessed with those things. It's just such a magical experience watching the jets of water all lit up dancing in time with the music. It was a terrific vacation, in no way diminished by the fact that it took us nine hours to drive home. We're already planning our next trip to Vegas. (If I can figure out how to post pictures in my journal I'll post a few.)
I went back to Virginia the first week of December to see my brother and my brand new nephew, Evan. It had been almost three years since I'd seen J. so it was great to see him again. And Evan is a total sweetie. He was only about 2 weeks old when I was there so he didn't really do much beyond eat, cry, and sleep. Still, he's super cute and it's very cool being an aunt. I got to spent a good amount of time with my parents and friends, some of whom I hadn't seen since I left town two years ago. I had drinks with some former coworkers, most of whom I figured I'd never see again. I was surprised at how nice it was to see them again. It kind of helped me come to terms with some of the residual bad feelings from the hell job I had while I was there. I spent a good amount of time dealing with other bad memories, trying to lay some other ghosts to rest. Not sure how successful I was with that but I guess time will tell.
And then it was back to San Diego to tackle massive amounts of work and try to get ready for Christmas. The day after I got back, R.'s landlady gave him 30 days notice so he started looking for places to live. Long story short, he's moving to Carlsbad, which is almost 30 miles from me. I'm fairly seriously pissed about that, but there's not much to be done about it at this point. He's been massively distracted by the whole thing so I'll be glad when he gets settled in his new place so his brain can return to planet Earth.
Christmas and New Years have been good. Quiet, but good. I've taken the dog to the beach a couple of times and generally enjoyed my four day weekends. It's going to be pretty hard to go back to work tomorrow. I've got a ton of things to do before my boss comes back from vacation so I'll stay pretty busy I imagine.
I hope everyone out there had a good holiday. And on that note I'm off to bed.
