My Long-Overdue Geneva Report!

Mar 10, 2007 02:21

I’ve been back from Geneva for a month now, but I’ve been busy and generally in a funk, and… oh, let’s not make excuses, shall we? I went, I saw, and I returned, almost without incident. Read on…

Oooh, Shard taught me how to make an lj-cut. )

Hah. I had the same thought process regarding the frac-euro thing. Glad you enjoyed the trip, and that the German airport guys didn't get too fresh with you.

Ten times better? Like, what, "at least I'm not eating haggis"? :)

That, plus the knowledge that all those Scottish people consider it a special day, PLUS the knowledge of how they choose to celebrate a really great day in Scottish history.

It's all very layered.

Sounds like a rockin' trip. Dare I ask what job it is you have that gets you sent to Geneva for a random trip?

I am the editor of magicthegathering.com, the web site for the card game Magic: The Gathering. One of my roles is coverage editor, for which I fly to 4 Pro Tour tournaments each year plus the U.S. National Championships and World Championships. These take place in absurdly cool exotic locations, where I spend most of my time sitting in a back room at my laptop editing tournament coverage. But I get to fly to these amazing places and hobnob (and play!) with many of the biggest names in the Magic community, which I love.

(Fun fact: When not traveling, I edit, among others, theferrett's weekly article on our site, not that it generally needs much work ( ... )

So, basically you get paid to check over the words that other people have written, and you get to fly to awesome places to do it? And you get to write some of your own as well?

That is seriously cool. That is cool with a gavel and wig, it is so serious. But not too serious - the wig is pink.

Yes, you've got the essence of it. And when I'm not traveling, I work with people I respect on a game I love in a room I've wanted to work in since I was 13. I am, in the words of numerous Magic-playing friends, a filthy lucksack.

Glad you approve--the world could use more pink old timey judge wigs.

I think Mr. Hur's statement is hilarious, but I don't have any context on it.

It's so cool that you got to play with Kenji.

After darkness, light
After day, night

If there was context, I didn't catch it either. He was just talking to some guy. It was full-on, Twilight Zone weird.

Playing with Kenji was an honor and a pleasure. He really is a genius. And, in case I did not stress this enough, absurdly tiny.
