An oxymoron contradicts itself, but when further examined is true. Think on a higher level. People say civilization is advancing, gaining newer technology. Rogers is sarcastically saying it, telling us that the newer technology is just creating new ways to kill.
If you think about that, creating new ways to kill is more of a devolution than an evolution.
With the second one, Thurber is questioning why people feel they have to defy, why they feel motivated to change themselves and who they are in order to be unlike the majority. The peculiar thing is that he is also saying that most/everybody tries be the minority by doing the same, and therefore they are no longer the minority.
