we really didn't know what his status was until today -- just got a report he's in Cambridge Hospital. So he's not dead. Don't yet know a whole lot more about his status. Film at 11.
Presumably the friend with a severe alcoholism problem.
A few weeks ago I had an acquaintance die of alcoholism-related disease. If you friend is unwilling to pursue medical treatment, it sounds like he will very soon be dead too. This is nothing but a slow-motion suicide, and should be treated as such.
I assume they have him on a 72-hour hold. That's a good first step, and maybe they will be able to convince him to go to a 30-day addiction program. If you have the time and motivation, perhaps you can consult an addiction counselor for advice. Unfortunately, I don't have much advice to share.
