I guess a question that I have had brought up in discussing this with people is this: Would this be such an uproar if Imus was a black man? I do not know the answer to that.
I'm still laughing over the image in my mind of Pat Robertson hosting a gay pride parade! LOL
Most of the people who use the word "fag" or "towel head" have been high school age "kids". I really don't go off on them about it. I just explain to them that we have guests of all kinds, and those types of words should not be used at any time. Maybe I'm not a good 'mo because I don't make a big deal out of it. As far as the middle eastern thing, it is so far back in my lineage, that one could not tell my ancestry by looking at me.
Maybe it wouldn't have been such a big deal if it had been a black man who said those things. But I'm not sure that a black talk show host would have said those things. Maybe a rapper rapping about them would. I just don't understand seeing a basketball team play and having the words "nappy headed hoes" come to my mind, and I certainly can't understand saying them even if they had come to mind.
As for work, I don't think you should make a big deal out of it, but I do think that saying, "I find that offensive" would make a very clear point.
red alert - cuz it doesn't get used enoughprotonboyApril 11 2007, 21:30:45 UTC
it is a racial slur which has more power than a gay-bashing phrase. if it was a sex-ist remark - no problem. fasion insult - expected! but both fasion & racial - OMG - its national news!

You are quite funny!!!!
It is strange to me what makes national news these days! To me a prime example is the "feud" that was between Donald Trump and Rosie O'Donnell.
You see, part of my problem with this is why does a racial slur have more power than a gay-bashing phrase? I know that being physically gay-bashed it for sure hurts no less.
I agree with what you said. I am too desensitized to be appalled by what Imus has said because I have heard those words all of my life. I am black and I really don't understand why some offensive words are wrose than others when they are all offensive. I don't know if Imus should be fired either but justice wasn't served when he was and they did not succeed in trying to make an example out of him. I am the kind of guy that takes the middle road and I think that if I think that what someone says is stupid(David Duke, Jesse Jackson, and pseudo-reverend Al Sharpton) I just make it a point to ignore them until they say something reasonable. I have listened to Imus' show once and I really didn't like it so I choose not to listen to it. I know that I might be a bad person because I really don't get hurt when offensive language is used until it is directed at me in a deliberately offensive way.

Agreed 110%!!!
Now if it was me watching Alexandre Despatie diving and I would say "Slam that sexy Speedo bulge in my ass!" now that would be entirely appropriate!
