[If the Doctor were human, he'd look exhausted. However, holograms don't get tired. Just frustrated and tetchy.]

I don't know how it's possible, but I've lost count of the number of patients in the infirmary.

[No, he hasn't.]

There are so many people dying, reviving, coming down with the plague, sneaking out, sneaking in, breaking bones, lending ( Read more... )

No. Sometimes Inmates and Wardens disappear without any warning. It's not a comment on your competence or attentiveness; there's nothing you could have done to prevent it. It's just another one of the Barge's....quirks.

I'd be happy to keep an eye on your system.

What if she hasn't disappeared? If the matter was merely that I was reassigned, surely that is a mark against my competence as a warden.

And - please don't take offense - do you have experience with complex holographic systems?

In my time here I've reverse-engineered a hologram not unlike yourself and a holographic communication device, and have since been working on improving them. My understanding of the underlying systems and related problems is quite extensive. So, yes. I have. And reassignments can happen at random as well. If the Admiral didn't have faith in your competenc you wouldn't be here.

In that case, I'm thankful for the help.

Agreed, and I can monitor you for degradation. I can also store a back-up copy of you within an available storage device, should there be an emergency.

Thank you, Commander. I'd appreciate that.

I can return to the infirmary and do a diagnostic between patients. If you would prefer to wait it would be understandable. For a thorough evaluation of all of your programming and to compress your individual files, I estimate over an hour of inactivity.

I would prefer to wait until my colleagues have had a good meal and a full night's sleep before deactivating myself.

You guys might have just not been a good match. Don't sweat it. Means he figured out you were better meant for someone else.

Does this happen often?

Not often, but it can. Either she placed a request, or there might have been a mix-up in the first place.

I suppose it might have been a mix-up. I'm worried about her, though. I haven't heard from her in more than a week.

Asking inmates to stop attacking each other? Might as well ask a dog to stop salivating at a piece of chopped liver.

If you want to stop the dog from salivating, you could make the liver unappetizing.

Hmm.

Exactly. It's not enough just to ask. The situation needs to change before we can expect change in our inmates.

Level Zero doesn't seem like it's effective.

I do wish the violence would cease. I'll be in tomorrow to alleviate the strain. I shouldn't have departed the infirmary anyway. [He thought he could make a difference. He should have stayed where he was needed instead of adding to the problem.]

Where did you go?

[He shifts uncomfortably. And not like the conversation is making him uncomfortable. In the way that he's hurting a little bit.] I went to try and talk my elder self out of murdering people. I wasn't as helpful as I would have preferred.
