Urgent help needed from computer experts

Would anyone who is at all familar with computers be willing to pop around Bridge Road asap to have a look at Tom's computer please? It's picked up some sort of virus and continually restarts as it loads up Windows. He has tried getting it to run in Safe Mode although with no success. If even safe mode is a no go then the operating system is corrupted. Basically, you have to rebuild the PC. This will involve reformatting the drive, so before doing that, take the hard drive out, and hook it up as a second drive to another PC that's working, so that you can copy off any important files.

alternatively if you don't want to pull it apart, you get somebody to burn ubuntu or some other linux based system to a disc, run that on the broken machine from the disc and copy any files to a usb stick/ipod/cd if you have a 2nd cd drive/something.

also possibly worth a shot is if you have the original windows cd you can muck about with the system recovery tool and see if you can replace the specific file that's been corrupted but unless you have a vague idea what you're doing with it or know somebody who does you might want to leave that one.
