The folks are looking to getting me a new desktop computer. As there are many others who are more keyed in than I am, do they have any suggestions as to specs etc?

That looks very similar to one of my budget gaming rigs. There's a few things I'd do different, but overall it's a really good "Will do pretty much anything the average user throws at and it run most games really well" build.
