Just curious what you guys think about this- it's something I posted in my journal, but I figured it should go here as well, as maybe a bit of discussion fuel.

So, my question is- is Tony tragic, or is he just a jerk? I'm for the tragic option, and my reasoning is behind the cut because it contains spoilers.

I don't think I can agree with you that he's a tragic character. I mean, your proof and the way you view it is of course your opinion and well you can't be wrong with an opinion :3 However I disagree ( ... )

This is what I love so so so much about this movie- it's such a great discussion piece. It gives you just enough info on the characters so that you feel like you know them, but there's room for speculation and questioning as well. I love when a movie does that ( ... )

Oh it's not babbling I adore the film and I'm a huge Gilliam fan and I've seen the movie somewhere 9-10 times now. I happen to work for a small Indi Theater and I totally got to run it as much as I wanted there. Plus I also got the movie poster for the display out front, but that's besides the point ( ... )

Ooooh, lucky! I just ordered two mini posters from Ebay, haha. Can't wait for them to come in so I can hang them up!

skdgnmkl you're making some excellent points, and I think I'm really going to have to watch the movie again trying to set aside that he's my favourite character and just REALLY try to pick up on all the little bits. I love that there are sososo many ways to view his character. I'll letcha know once I see it again!

I do agree, this movie is honestly one of the most fascinating to be released in the last couple of years.

I think your view about Tony is correct. I love my villains, too. For instance, I was all over the Death Eaters in HP for years, lol.

It's a shame a lot of people don't get it, they don't know what they are missing!

You're a WWE fan too? :D *Thumbs up*

I actually see the "trying to save your daughter's life" as more of a double-motive kind of thing. I think that after he saw the ladders, his original priorities came back into being his first and foremost concern. I think he did love Valentina, but that wasn't as important as wealth, fame, etc after he was reminded of those goals and given a way to reach them. So I think he *did* mean to save her life, but it was more important to get back to the ladders? I think the nervous bit in the canoe might go along with that, too- nervous anticipation, or something ( ... )
