muse_shuffle: February Prompt 10. Nobody warned you >> Nobody told you to make up your mind (Interpol - ‘Wrecking Ball’)
"Lachie... W-What's the matter, sweetheart?" she asked, her voice small and choked.
""Nothing. Everything is just peachy. I've had time. Time to reconsider. I don't want this anymore. I don't love you and I don't want to marry you."
Brennan felt like the floor was ripped out from under her and she had to grab the back of the chair to stop from falling. Her ears began to ring as she searched his face, his eyes. They were blank and distant, telling nothing. "No... Lachie, whatever it is... w-we can work it out. This isn't..." She didn't know what else to say, she just stared at him helplessly, hoping he would laugh and tell her he was just kidding.
"I don't love you anymore! Sappy romanticism won't get you anywhere this time, Brennan!"
Brennan reeled back, her words slicing through her heart in horror. He wasn't kidding, he certainly wasn't going to laugh. She couldn't speak, her throat had closed over thickly. She let go of the back of the chair and with a shaky hand, removed the engagement ring. She set it down on top of the magazines beside his bed and without being able to look at him without breaking down, turned and fled the room.
Something wasn't right. This wasn't Lachlan, this wasn't the person she'd come to love more than her life breath itself. Pain coursed through her, stemming from deep inside her chest and making it feel like someone crushed her heart in a vice. Everything had been getting better, he was awake and it was time to start planning the next step; to start getting over the horrible tragedy with each other, at the very least. His words sliced sharply through her brain again and she leant against the wall just outside of the Intensive Care Unit and broke down into heart-wrenching sobs. How could he do this to her? How could he just make up his own mind about their relationship and rip it all away from her? The ice-cold tone of his voice just didn't sound like him; so harsh that the accent was almost indistinguishable.
Out of the blue, for seemingly no reason at all, he'd crushed it and she had no idea if she could make it through the next part without him.
