so that pain in my jaw really is something

Serves me right for avoiding the dentist for the last 15 years. For the last couple of months, I'd been having a throbbing pain in my left jaw coupled with inability to tolerate cold products. It came to a head the week before my exam and so I made an appt with a dentist to see what the heck was going on ( Read more... )

I've had two root canals. They were only moderately painful (and that mostly because it takes a while before novocaine works for me and dentists are never that patient). Afterwards wasn't much more annoying than your average post-filling recovery. I echo the soft-foods suggestion during recovery. My recovery period was about a day. The next day I was able to eat anything again (which was nice, as I hadn't been able to chew on that side of my mouth for about a week before my first root canal).

Oh yeah, and prescribe for yourself shakes, malts, and slushies (the main yum liquid cold groups). It is a great excuse. :-)

Sorry babe, the best I can do for you is amputate at the neck. Never had a root canal, but I think running screaming into the night would be my plan. I too am freaked out just by the thought of it!

That being said: definitely what vahlkyree about the jaw-block thing is a MUST. I'm going to keep this in mind for any future long dental work of my own. Also, iPod iPod iPod as some of the issues (for me at least) include the noises. Don't know about the medical issues around root canals, but perhaps taking your painkiller of choice BEFORE the event would help? I know that with surgeries you can't take blood thinners beforehand - as bleeding out is a bad thing. I doubt that root canal falls into this catagory though ( ... )

Want to know something funny? By the last root canal, I was literally falling asleep in the chair while the dentist was working away. I decided that wasn't a good plan though - I didn't want to end up with a hole in my cheek due to my head snapping upwards in that "I'm awake!" moment you sometimes get when drifting off. hehe.
