Seto had trust issues for a very long time. Ever since his parents died and he was left to take care of Mokuba, he was never able to trust anyone except for his little brother. In the orphanage, there was no such things as friends. Everyone was just fighting to get adopted; to get out of there and into a nice home. The children were in constant competition.
Then he and Mokuba were adopted by the business tyrant, Gozaburo Kaiba. He kept the two close siblings away from each other, telling Seto that Mokuba was being well taken care of when he was being neglected. Seto had trusted Gozaburo and had his trust crushed in his adopted father's hands.
Since then, Seto had built up some walls around him that could only be broken by someone who he cared about, loved. For a long time, Mokuba was the only one who could do this.
That was until he met Rebecca. It took her a while, but she worked at gaining Seto's trust and didn't betray it. And so, Rebecca Hawkins was the one to break down the walls around Seto Kaiba's heart.
