I'm having a harder and harder time justifying my involvement with the UUA. The more I read about the activities that they have and the groups the create the more disgusted I get. I hate the office staff right now and I'm getting really sick of some of the random conversations I feel like I have to be in. I feel like the quality of the people I ( Read more... )

Sorry, the UUA sucks, but there isn't much that I can do about that. Not everyone in the UUA is bad. You seem to have a way of finding some of the worst and having to work with them for long periods of time. I hate to say it, but I like working on the local level because then it's basically me and maybe one or two other people doing stuff and I don't really have to deal with people's crap.

Oh well, hope things get better for you.

You know, as much as I dislike the AR/AO work that's going on, I'm really looking forward to the AR/AO training in January. Why? Just so I can shake things up and fuck w/ a few heads.

danny-

i personally totally love what you have to say.

i guess i feel fortunate that i haven't had much interaction directly with the UUA crap, and i agree with chris that working at the local (and for me, district) level is helpful.

i know you aren't writing this post for people to like...give you advice or anything. i'm just saying, i get it.

also, if you can talk to me sometime in the future about what, if any, ideas you have to make concentric AO/AR work less craptacular, lemme know, k?

thanks!

the white allies have been around for a while, or at least there was a white allies group around a few years ago. i couldn't say if they were then the way they are now, i went to one of their meetings but that was 4 or 5 years ago and i don't remember much. i hear what you're saying about the whole "there wasn't much I could do it happened before I was alive" thing. i hate it when people expect you to feel guilty over something you can't control. do i feel it was a horrible thing? yes, but i don't feel like i'm at fault for it, i'm not racist, i don't support slavery, in fact, my family where practically slaves themselves (indentured servants), so why should i feel like its my fault, why should i feel guilt for being white?

It's a thought I've considerd, I'm in a constant battle of do I fight for what I beleave or do I let the people that like things the way it is stay and do there thing while I retreat back to my local church and just do stuff there, it's really tough for me to say.

and I don't think being a UU completly means doing your own thing, I think along alot of lines that's what it means, but mainly in regards to faith as apposed to morality. I think the moral values are pretty squarely dictated to us as what is right what is wrong, especially in the case of racism and oppression.
