[Point in time taken from canon] Chapter 185, after Watanuki announces he's taking over the shop.
[Background]
Here. A summary of the arc not covered is as follows:
A woman enters the shop asking for some cooking lessons and becomes Watanuki's client. He is disturbed that the lady wouldn't taste her own cooking, and later we find out that it's because she doesn't like herself. Yuuko disappears soon after Watanuki encounters her in a dream, and Doumeki temporarily stays over in the shop.
For the month that Yuuko's gone, Watanuki tries the same routine in giving the client some of his own cooking for her to taste and being turned away. Doumeki always accompanies him in these visits. In the end, she finally eats the food Watanuki brings her and compares it to her own cooking.
Watanuki is happy until he discovers that she and several other people no longer remember who Yuuko is. He runs back to the shop, and Doumeki follows him. He finds an unconscious Watanuki in the store room, and he carries him back to the receiving room. Maru, Moro, and Mokona have returned, but that Yuuko wasn't there. Doumeki steps out of the room to give the three privacy in their mourning.
Because of their shared eye, he was also able to witness Yuuko's death. He and the black Mokona talk a little about the egg Doumeki was given, its purpose, and its use. It was during this time that Watanuki slips off to visit the storeroom again, where he finds both Syaorans in the final stages of their confrontation in TRC. Again, Doumeki is able to see a little of this encounter, and of how Watanuki's eyeglasses are handed back to him.
Alarmed, he runs to the storeroom. It is here Watanuki announces the terms that he's accepted in order to succeed the shop: that his own time is withheld until he meets Yuuko again.
With that ends the first part of xxxHoLiC.
[Personality]
Doumeki Shizuka's name is an apt one - he communicates with meaningful looks and silences, staying aloof otherwise, choosing to speak only when he wishes to communicate something or to deflect what he considers unwanted uattention. This sense of deliberateness extends to his decision on whether or not to follow social norms of politeness, and to him being very particular about what he wants, such as the food he eats. He is someone who refuses to be pressured from the outside - all the demands he chooses to follow are his own, and he will follow his moral compass to the very end despite knowing that the consequences may affect him negatively.
This certainty in himself is the source of both his confidence and his pride. For the most part, he has been entirely self-reliant, choosing to find his own solutions and accomplishing all of it with his own strength. It was only when he got to know Watanuki Kimihiro, however, that he was forced to acknowledge that there was something he wanted beyond the contentment of ordinary life, consequently shattering his own indifference and willing himself to go beyond his limits. Indeed, a lot can be said that he has changed from a state of placidity to one of vigilant watchfulness.
Being raised by his grandfather until fifth grade has given Doumeki a unique perspective of things. Doumeki Haruka was a skilled priest with strong spiritual power and mild precognition; from him, Doumeki inherited not only the abililty to exoricise spirits, but also the learned capability to observe and to wait for the decisive moment to act. Both qualities are important throughout the course of the series, since it leads him from saving Watanuki from small things such as being eaten by hungry psychic residue, to being tasked with making an important choice for when Watanuki's own final confrontation takes place.
Doumeki's taciturn nature isn't an obstacle for him in forming close friendships. Doumeki and Himawari get along well and they do share common interests like reading books, and Doumeki also treats Kohane with a level of affection, like giving her pats on the head. He is aware of their strengths and weaknesses, and because of this he is able to support them should they start questioning themselves. A third creature Doumeki gets along well with is the black Mokona, who is often his drinking buddy and, later on, his look-out for Watanuki while he's away.
Neither does it get in the way of him letting his displeasure be known. The expressions on his face and his non-verbals are more eloquent an honest than speech can be especially if he's caught off-guard; the difference is easily visible if one is observant enough, or are aware when he wishes to skim over a topic and successfully does so by switching it with another. A exceptional incident was when he actually shoved Watanuki against the wall to demand to see Yuuko when he found out about that the other boy had sacrificed the vision of his right eye so Doumeki could have his back, and so far nothing has merited a repeat reaction - not that his other angry moments are any less dramatic.
[Abilities]
Doumeki's observational skills aren't to be ignored, as subtle as they are when they come up in the series. More often than not, he is able to assess or guess the nature of a person by simply looking at them or by tasting their food (I kid you not.).
At school, he's known for being studious and skilled with archery. He makes good use of both in finding the solutions to problems and protecting those he cares for. Doumeki has also inherited the power of exorcising spirits from his grandfather. This is manifested in two main ways: he is able to fire concentrated amounts of chi with the use of a bow, and he has a pure aura that keeps dark spirits at bay. The latter is something neutral beings find pleasant: the Ame Warashi once comments on this, going as far as sniffing at him up close.
He is able to see through Watanuki's right eye on occasions that Watanuki experiences high emotional spikes. It is unknown if Watanuki is able to do the reverse.
[Other important stuff]
Half of his right eye's sight and some of his blood is with Watanuki. This was, according to Yuuko, so that that moment (whatever it is Watanuki has yet to do) will not be the last.
Because Doumeki is being groomed to take over the temple his family owns, he is likely knowledgeable in several rituals, especially ones concerning birth, marriage, and death. He is also able to read and write Old Japanese, which is useful in understanding his grandfather's books and research.
[Sample post]
He sat down in seiza position, his closed hands placed on his knees, his bow and a single arrow placed on either side of him. Around him, the dojo was a deathly silent, full with a deafening stuffiness that could easily smother its only occupant if he wasn't careful.
Doumeki, however, hadn't forgotten himself, nor the purpose of the weapons close to his hands. He flexed a gloved hand, feeling the weight and firmness of the leather covering his skin that served as both protection and resistance, and kept his gaze at the entrance of the cavernous room.
He was waiting.
Something shifted outside, and Doumeki was able to hear the sound of rustling leaves, though their gray shadows had been dancing for a while now against the sterile light streaming in from the slotted windows. A frown weighed the corners of his lips as he picked up the bow and arrow, fitting the nook of the shaft and pulling the string, keeping his grasp steady, his aim fixed on the door.
A twig snapped. The panel swung open.
He fired.
The same void that consumed his arrow was similar to the one that greeted him when his eyes opened.
Releasing a breath, Doumeki rolled to his side before sitting up, all too aware of his heart pounding solidly in his chest, and ran a hand down his face. He could still feel the glove covering his hand and the tension of the bow and string as he steadied his aim. There was a faint vibration in the air, as if the twang of the string snapping back to place still beat in the silence.
Another dream. He had been having a lot of these since late.
He sat still for a few more moments to gather his thoughts before he stood up to head for the kitchen, rearranging his robes as he went. There would be little sleep for him that night.
[What do you hope to do with this character in Somarium?]
In canon, Doumeki hopes to find a solution to Watanuki's situation. This becomes more pressing for him given the point that he's from, where Watanuki's separation from the world outside the shop becomes more distinct, and the game's setting.
While the above will be his priority, I want to have him meet more people and form odd friendships. I am interested to play out how he will develop connections from scratch, given his tendency to use more of non-verbal communication, because it's a challenge for most quiet types.
[Which rule was your favorite and why?]
No particular favorite, but the parts about watching out for OOCness were unique. I've been poking around a couple of games every now and then, and it's the first time I've seen that kind of rule set.
[Where did you hear about Somarium?]
