[001 - Audio] It's almost like a bad hangover...

Jul 21, 2011 10:13

[It isn't that she woke up in an unfamiliar forest that throws Rose for a loop. She had been traveling back to the Homelands, along with just about every other Fable who had been in the mundy world. Haven was supposed to have a huge, magical grove along its borders, so forests were to be expected. No, it was the fact that she woke up, when she ( Read more... )

[Well... damn, there's a voice he sure didn't think he'd be hearing again. He recalls rather distinctly how their last encounter went. The sex wasn't too great, her mood was foul, and her stench even worse. Though judging by her voice, she apparently pulled herself out of that funk.

Or maybe she was before that happened? Seemed to happen with some people.

Well, he's Jack. She'll be happy to see him either way.]

Hey there, Rosebush. Sounds like you're looking for me.

[Keep close, Red. He's got the umbrella propped up but with the way the rain is coming down, being close is about the only way to stay dry.]

You can thank the Malnosso for it. They're not even wizards and witches either. Scientists. Super scientists, like Mundy TV shit. They've got us trapped here in a big giant bubble. Not even Golden Boughs was this impenetrable.

[Rose has no issues staying close to Jack for the purposes of staying dry. At this moment, he's winning points with her by his actions. Plus, he actually came out with an umbrella and a blanket and didn't suggest they do it against a tree first. It's amazing, considering the last time they saw each other.]

I was kidnapped by scientists? How did they manage that? I was in the middle of magically traveling from one world to another.

[She doesn't address Jack's comments about how impenetrable the place is. He's been there seven months without escaping, and Rose knows Jack. That's not an inconsiderable amount of time for him.]

Some sort of sci-fi multidimensional shit. [He gives a dismissive handwave.]

I was on the road when it happened to me. Never figured out how it works.

[Good thing his place isn't far ahead, even after this trek through the woods. Her clothing situation can probably wait, right?]

[That's fine, the science stuff was rather over her head, all things considered.]

Right. Don't think I'll have much luck either. So where are we going anyway?

[Because it's not as if Rose has any idea what buildings they're walking past or where they're headed.]

[The guide will explain it a lot better than Jack ever can, so it's just as well to drop it.]

I've got an apartment here. It's not much further and it'll get us out of this damn rain. You can stay as long as you like. [Or indefinitely. Like old times.]

You've got your own apartment? These scientists are pretty generous...

[Though not without a price, it seems. She hazards a glance back at her new wings with a quirk to her lips.]

But thanks, I'd appreciate that, Jack.

[And now he gets a side-look, because really he's...being awfully nice. It's quite a bit different from the Jack she remembers seeing last, and more like the one she used to know.

So far, anyway.]

[That was the Jack who was high from his victory over Lady Luck, looting Americana, thwarting Bookburner, and saving tons of Fables. His luck in Luceti has not nearly been so considerable. Hard to be an arrogant bastard when life keeps handing you lemons.]

Fabletowners stick together. That was our motto or something, I think. [Probably not. Jack didn't quite follow it anyway.]

[Rose raises an eyebrow at Jack now. She didn't know what was stranger about that statement. That he actually said it and seemed to mean it, or that he did so after taking his leave Fabletown with a significant amount of its funds.

Still, she's not above taking advantage in this situation.]

If it wasn't, it can be here.

[So long as Jack doesn't do something stupid to get both of them into trouble.]

[Now it's his turn to be surprised. He may be thick sometimes, but hes' not dumb. If she's taking this so well and willing to go along with him, she couldn't know what happened to them before, right?

She was too healthy looking for that.]

Catch me up on things up at the Farm. What's been going on?

[Sorry Jack, Rose knows exactly what happened before. She was in a low, low, low place and Jack took advantage. At the time she figured it was what she deserved.

She might have held a grudge except it was just...not all that unexpected of Jack at that point.]

You mean after you were kicked out and once I crawled out of bed?

[Rose pauses, collecting her thoughts.]

Totenkinder reverted back to a much younger age, fought Mister Dark and won...temporarily. He got free again and put the whole Farm in danger, which is why we were all fleeing to Haven...

[And that is the super condensed version. Rose is a bit too cold and wet to go through all the details right now.]

[See, all he needed to know was about the bed thing. But... what the hell is Haven?]

What the hell is Haven?

[He wasn't... very good at picking up details when he was at the Farm. He picked up on the fact the Adversary was gone, but had no idea who he was. He knew Fabletown was demolished and some evil dude was there. Oh, and that Boy Blue and Prince Charming were dead. That's about all he had picked up on.]

How can you not--[Rose cuts herself off, remembering Jack's been away from Fabletown and of course he'd have no way of knowing. It's too large a story to repeat in full at that moment, however. Rose settles for the short version.]

Flycatcher got his memory back, and with the Forsworn Knight's armor and Excalibur, he went into the Witching Well, took all those we sent into it who would follow him into the Homelands. He set up his kingdom there and successfully stood against the Adversary. It's a safe place, and it's called Haven.

[Homelands... you know with the Adversary gone, it might not be a bad idea for Jack to head back there again, once he was done with Luceti. Playing by Fabletown rules was a bitch.

... then again, Fabletown didn't exist anymore.]

Any idea what he did with Excalibur? Because some old bastard impaled me with it last year. [If that was Flycatcher's fault, he is going to give that geek such an asskicking.]

[Rose grins before she can stop herself. Sorry Jack, but the thought of him impaled by Excalibur is a somewhat amusing mental picture for her.]

May not have been the real Excalibur. As far as I know, King Ambrose has had it for quite some time now.

[She pulls the blanket tighter around her shoulders with a brief shiver.]

We almost there?

Felt real. [And while it didn't hurt then, it did hurt a few weeks ago when it killed him.]

This is it. After you. [Naturally, of course, after he opens the door the lady. It's just a room with a stairwell, but the door straight across leads to the hallway.]
