my art history teacher passed on some knowledge to me today that was passed onto him by a cynical teacher he admired. he said "for the first twenty years of your art career, your art looks like a hundred other people's art. for the middle twenty years, it looks like fifty other people's art. if you are lucky, the art you make at the end of your career looks like only twenty other people's art." we were looking at a picture by Vuillard that had similar brush strokes and uses of tone to Van Gogh and Monet.

i think i have a similar feeling about the stuff i do. other people have done something similar, but what i'm doing artistically and musically still has merit, by the token that is helps me express or it brings me joy. if you decided to do a rough draft of your alien wolf comic, that would be cool. when was the last time you made a comic?

made webcomic randomness with tim two years ago, haven't made a comic comic since i was like 13 haha

i hope its more than luck that determines whether you make it to phase 3 of the cynic's art theory.
i'd argue, however, that for the first 20 years of your art career your art looks like like a hundred -thousand- other people's art. more than that even.
