(I blog what I want when I want. This level of dedication embarrasses me at times...)
You know what I love? I love the Olympics - 2 weeks of full on sport. The best in the work vs. the best in the world. All beamed live into my lounge room at prime time.
You know what I hate? I hate channel 7 (apologies to those not reading in Australia - you have no frame of reference for this I imagine) - apparently the trade off for not showing soaps is that we need to harp on the drama. And the shit sports. There is no drama in swimming - I'm a swimmer - you might as well be doing a time trial for all the gamesmanship involved. Track sprinting is much the same. And no I don't need to see some Yank hit the wall in super super slo-mo with a backing of inspirational fru fru music. Meanwhile we get highlights of a game where we struggle back from a mile behind to take a brilliant win in the last minutes - sorry, back to the heats in the "cube". Has anyone noticed that our women didn't even make it to the heats of the gymnastics? And who that we know is weightlifting? P.S. - I don't care if we are a medal chance in the beach volleyball, having seen the best of indoor volleyball, the beach version is deathly boring. Oh, and while I'm at it (and despite the fact it doesn't effect me) we are in the throw of the birth of digital television people. And yet what are you showing on your digital channel? EXACTLY WHAT IS ON THE ANALOGUE CHANNEL! Anyone think it might be a great opportunity to push the whole multi channel thing? I mean, channel 10 has started showing NASCAR so they can show off the new capabilities! And now what are they showing? A slo-mo of some Frenchie beating an indonesian in fencing? What?
You know what I love? I love SBS - they don't care where you are from or what you want. They don't care what channel 7 has palmed off to them (as long as they get the soccer). They will play a full game - start to finish - no matter who it is. Women's handball, water polo, volley ball (both kinds), badminton, boxing, whatever - as long as it is a top rate, world champions match (or soccer - natch). If you sit down at the start of a match/game/race you will see the whole match/game/race, and nothing but a few ads and maybe a loss of transmission will interrupt it. They showed the whole men's cycling road race. All five-ish hours of it. The only sport that gets that kind of love from a commercial channel is Bathurst - and that's a whole other national pride thing. Today during my lunch break I saw Brazil, current world volleyball champs, vs. Russia, the team Brazil upset for the throne. Massive clash of titans stuff, and for a true sports fan, brilliant to watch.
You know what I hate? I hate waiting to know - but love the fact I waited. I just finished "Deathly Hallows" (because we waited for the soft cover version) and thought it was great. No more than that here (
matron_jojo hasn't read it yet), but I was shocked, thrilled, distraught, elated, surprised and ultimately fulfilled.
You know what I love? I love internet pizza - easy to order. Brilliant to eat.
You know what I hate? I hate 15 and a half hour shifts - I'm still tired three days later.
You know what I love? I love it when my hunches are right - I was looking for a new book (as "Deathly Hallows" has wetted my appetite for reading) and came across "American Gods" by Neil Gaimen. Of course I am aware of Neil Gaimen's work, but hadn't heard of this book. Two chapters in and I am very pleasantly surprised.
You know what I hate? I hate when I talk to someone who should be giddy with excitement and they're not. And thru no fault of his own. And I hate that I know that it's rarely as bad as he thinks it is, but only time will show me to be right.
