I'm a little disappointed that the Hottest 100 "of all time" was so limited in scope ( Read more... )

Heh, I dislike those sorts of lists just because of how utterly unobtainable a "best of all time" actually *is*. I was pretty unimpressed with Smells like Teen Spirit being no. 1. Then there's the Jeff Buckley problem. I feel really bad I didn't vote for Stevie Nicks or someone.

Same! I can't believe I didn't vote for PJ Harvey. Ah well. Next time. I completely agree with your Smells Like Team Spirit sentiment - how did it reach number one?

I'm betting a lot of people in their late-twenties/early-thirties voted for it.

I forgot to vote. But dammit, I would have voted Patti Smith "Land" as my number 1. Because it is my favourite song!

And yeah, Hallelujah? Really? A cover of a cover?! Come on people!

I can understand how 'Smells like Teen Spirit' was number one though. I mean, I'm not a massive Nirvana fan, but as far as cultural significance goes...Yeah, Gen X-ers totally did most of the votes!

I was actually quite pleased with the top songs. Sure, they weren't varied, or surprising, or anything like that. But they were all good songs, and let's face it, the majority of people who vote like crazy in those kind of competitions are the triple j core audience. White hiphop/ageing grungesters are their demographic. You'd get the same age bias from any radio station. Would be interesting to see what kind of a haul RTR FM would bring in.

i wasn't at all surprised... but it was kinda sad. it was just like, the biggest singles from the past, with an alternative stick waving in its general vicinity.

none of my favourite ten songs of all time were in the top 100 i think, but then my fave bands tend to be a little on the obscure side.
