Ah, I agree with all except the living far away from work thing...it takes me like 1/2 hour to get to work with no traffic, which is a hike, but I live in Westchester, meaning practically no transportation and it's impossible to find an apartment that allows cats and I'd rather pay more for gas than give up my Blackie :x
I don't see why people are shocked, honestly. Gas prices always go up in the summer.
i think it's an objective reality that people will act irrationally to achieve a temporary benefit even when they know that the long term effects are harsh. i don't think it makes you a bad person to not want to give up your cat so that you could find an apartment closer to your work, you're just doing what people do. i do the same things. people as a whole act irrationally and contrary to actions that would lead to greater good all the time out of sentimentality, emotions, blah blah. as i said, irrationally. i don't know if we can change this, but until we work on it nothing is going to change.
That's really the only downfall to this apartment...that it's not right near my job. BUT I can work from home when the weather is bad and everything else about it is perfect...if I could just uproot it (and my landlords!) and plunk it in the same neighborhood as my job, it would be perfect :D
