Little Did I Know

We're landing now. I am a bit embarassed at what I had expected. Germany looks like any other country. Well... The streets don't have the same element of meticulousness to them. Things criss cross and zig zag oddly. They weren't built with purpose; they were built with the needs of the time and improved upon. But I was expecting, I don't know, something a little less... Modern.

I get off the plane, weary but excited. My travelling companion and I make our way to the claim and grab our many bags. I'm fresh out of AIT so I'm in good shape, but I'm a little worried about having to walk a long way carrying all this stuff. Good thing I hadn't gone airborne.

Where do we go now? he asks.

I'm not entirely sure. There's probably a USO here. Let's look.

It takes nearly an hour to find it, carrying our bags all the while. We groan, and resolve to brush up our German. But the excitement hasn't worn off yet.

We sign in off leave. Okay. This is the real deal. Real army. We're finally here.

Gentlemen, welcome to Germany, the briefer begins. Get comfortable - the majority of you will be spending the next two to three years of your lives in this hemisphere.

A few nervous chuckles. Why am I the only one that seems excited?

Never mind that, Past whispers to me. Ask when you can talk to Amanda.

I decide to appease him. Excuse me, Sergeant, I ask somewhat nervously, standing at ease.

Out of AIT?

Sergeant?

You don't have to do all that crap, he chuckles. I relax a little. What did you need?

I was just wondering when I could call my fiancee.

Your name?

K, Sergeant.

He shuffles his papers and looks at something. K, you'll be here three years when she becomes your wife. You've got time. For right now, be patient. There's lots yet to do.

K
