I play games with the dogs where I jump up and stare out the window, and most times they pick up on the cue and look outside where I'm looking. The whole action of jumping up gets them perked so maybe it's not a reliable test. I also make little sounds like they might to show that I'm on the scent.
I have to admit that they taught me this, though, as I took the cue from them and joined them at the window when they barked at joggers (no, I didn't bark along). I'd show interest in their actions and try to mimic them.
Yes, I'm sure with right behavior my dogs would take my cues and look in the direction of interest. They've been trained, as well, to go where we point (rather than just look at the end of our finger, as an untrained dog tends to do). But perhaps the behavior they mention here is more subtle, and focused solely on the eyes.
I would bark at the joggers as well, I think. Seems the polite thing...you know, share a common interest and all that. Like talking about sports at work.
