I was going to jump into the fray over the Canadian election results on someone else's journal, but (being Canadian) I then thought ah...what the heck. I'll post on my journal, no one reads it anyway ( Read more... )

Sorry; as an American I shouldn't have opened my mouth, especially to be glib about it.

Not at all! I totally respect your opinion... you may well turn out to be right about Harper, but for the countries' sake I hope not. I just wanted to point out that though I voted Conservative, I by no means agree with everything they do. At the very least, they will bear being watched closely. Hopefully the NDP will hold it together long enough to nip at their heels a bit ;). The last thing I want is to have them haul out their Bible Belt Reform mentality again...

Never apologise for voicing an opinion.

There's a difference between a well-thought and well-articulated opinion and just mouthing off though; mine was the latter, and that's worth an apology. I've seen what a mess of things that the neo-cons have made of it my country (and my former home state of Texas, may Rick "The Hair" Perry burn in his own fires), and worry for the future of yours a bit more than I probably should.

I definitely have a lot of practice at being wrong, as evidenced by my hopes for the Obama administration here. It's funny how the Left in both countries forms up a circular firing squad at the earliest opportunity, through victory and defeat, rather than getting done the things that need doing.

I always forget about the firearms laws up there. Though neither AUS or NZ would let me keep my handgun collection either, come to think of it.

Our laws are not as strict. You could keep your handguns...you just can't do anything with them except go to a range. ;)
Eliminating the Long Gun Registry won't change that (or anything related to handguns). It won't even change the Firearms Licencing requirements. Gun safety won't suffer, contrary to all the hand-wringing by soccer moms. All it will eliminate is the need to tell the government about every rifle and shotgun that you own/purchase, under penalty of law.
An inaccurate waste of time and money that the police would be stupid to rely on (put your guns away, boys...no firearms in this house!)

As an aside, all parties in Canada are Centerist as compared to the US...groups with extreme beliefs don't last long here. The Green party finally getting one seat in the last election is about as far out as it gets.

I barely follow American politics, never mind those of the World :o)

You know, probably, that I am not a "political" person either. There are things to be said for a minority government, I suppose (forced co-operation?) but in practice (here at least) all it meant was repeated elections (@ $300 milion apiece) and no one in government doing anything but campaining to preserve their pension. I've had it with that.
