Muse: Kate Austen
Fandom: Lost
Prompt set: #3

1. The problem with crowds was that while it was easy to get lost in them, it made it harder to see whoever is after you.
2. She tried not to think about how long she'd been driving, how long the road had become.
3. It wasn't hard drugging his drink, not when she knew it would be healthier for him in the long run.
4. Climbing up into the rig, Kate ignored the way the man looked down her blouse and trying to focus on the wallet he had resting in the center console.
5. It was only shaving a few minutes off her time, but in the long run those minutes might be what kept her out of jail.
6. Staring out the window everything beyond the glass was picture perfect suburbia and despite all her desires, Kate wasn’t sure she could survive it.
7. It wasn’t hate she felt as the motorcycle roared to life, it was satisfaction.
8. Saying I do had been one thing but signing her name, a name, to that legal paper was what truly made Kate feel as if she’d swallowed razor winged butterflies.
9. The folded paper was but a tiny square in her hip pocket, but it weighed on her mind like a lead weight.
10. She didn’t stop and wonder how long she’d have to drive, she just put the car in fear and slammed her foot onto the pedal.
11. Bundling up tighter in her coat, she pulled her cap down and pretended to be chilled as she walked past the security checkpoint.
12. It was a blank check, one she could make out for any amount yet as she walked away, it fluttered to the ground in tiny pieces.
13. Morose didn’t even begin to cover the dark mood that seemed to possess her every waking moment.
14. Knowing you were capable of something and actually doing it was not the same thing; not until you did it.
15. Curling her toes under, Kate tried to cause enough pain that she could bring tears to her eyes.
16. The secret to being successful was knowing that it took equal parts mind, heart and body.
17. By ten she still wasn’t calm and by seventeen she was beginning to think a hundred wouldn’t be enough.
18. Maximum speed limit aside, Kate kept it just below that number and prayed her car was nondescript enough to be overlooked.
19. Right and wrong had stopped factoring into her life years before, giving way to need and want.
20. Sitting on the stump on the side of the road, Kate gave into the tears, pressing the palms of her hand to her face as she cried.
21. Vows were words to be taken solemnly, even when the name spoken wasn’t your own.
22. Asked outright, Kate wouldn’t deny she was a liar, but that was the point because few rarely asked, or wanted, the truth.
23. Stepping out of the car, she titled her face towards the sky and let the rain course over here skin.
24. Curling her hand into a tight fist, Kate fought the desire not to hit him until the smug smile was gone despite knowing it was a losing fight.
25. Sleeping in the back of the car, she wondered how many days she could do this before the desire for a real bed would become too great.
26. Being pretty enough wasn’t enough and it never had been.
27. Try as she might, she couldn’t say the words humbly enough to sound authentic to her ears.
28. Watching the pair, Kate wondered if their sparring would be distraction enough to work the crowd.
29. He had all the looks but sadly the brains were lacking.
30. Listening to the sounds behind her, Kate was doubly sure that she wasn’t going to get out of this unscathed.
31. Staying slow and to the right, Kate drove through the checkpoint with a smile and a wave.
32. Watching through the window of the diner, the ache around her heart was almost too much to bear even as she couldn’t bring herself to turn away.
33. Dropping down onto the sand, Kate watched the waves roll in even well past the setting of the sun, when it was too dark to see anything but the lighter shading of the foam atop the water.
34. She was sure his nose hurt more than her hand, but that was of little concern.
35. She felt the car drifting through the turn, trying not to worry if she’d be able to pull out of it in time.
36. It moved slower than molasses in the wintertime but at least the car had working heat and it would get her out of the state by nightfall.
37. The bee circled lazily over her skin, alighting a moment before flying away and leaving her without a sting.
38. Always seemed like a fairytale, the sort of thing that was as fictional as happily ever after.
39. Waiting until the waitress was looking the other way, Kate snuck out back and into her car; gone before the waitress could even turn back around.
40. Despite the bait comments her dad used to make, she couldn’t help but savour the rolls of seaweed, fish and rice.
41. Opening the box, Kate sighed at the frothy lace within and fought the urge to don both veil and dress.
42. The glove had been tucked up under the seat and finding it only made Kate teary, something she couldn’t afford as well as sentiment and regret.
43. She pondered writing a note but there was little point when she knew it would only be torn up and thrown away.
44. There was nothing heroic in her actions, nothing to mark her the hero, and staring at Tom’s lifeless body she knew she was the villain.
45. Legitimately she knew she had no right to come back, but she had to see him, her, one last time.
46. Hitting the release on the seatbelt, she prepared herself for the fall, popping the door open at the last moment.
47. Popping the button on his jeans, Kate didn’t look him in the eyes, unwilling to accept that intimacy as she sunk to her knees.
48. There were days she felt between worlds, caught between the felon she was and the girl she’d been.
49. She tried not to think about her mother turning her in and the sorrow that came with it.
50. It was hard enough knowing her mother had turned her in, but knowing she expected Kate to march into the police station and accept her fate was nearly laughable.
