Saw the Cannes Ad Festival 2003 tonight ("You pay to see commercials? That is because you crazy!") w/
jetgirlx2 &
krk & her friend Jordan. As to be expected, some well-known commercials won awards, including:
-
The Comedian trailer-
Terry Tate, Office Linebacker (they only showed the TV-length spot)
-
Honda's "Cog" ad-
Ikea's "new lamp" commercial (Grand Prize) (bottom of page)
- Beer commercial after beer commercial after beer commercial. ;)
Some 2003 winners: (some winners from other years are there too)
http://giesbers.net/video/page3.html: Angry Chicken, Lamp
http://giesbers.net/video/page7.html: 206
http://giesbers.net/video/page8.html: Cog, Bored to Death
http://giesbers.net/video/page9.html: Holiday Party, Kinderpartijtje
The best audience reaction overall, I thought, was to the
Zazoo condoms ad. ("No Nonsense" on that page won an award, too) Unfortunately, knowing what the commercial is for lessens the impact. (I had seen the commercial before tonight, anyway) That was a problem for a couple of them... They showed the info card before the commercial, and knowing what it's for can sometimes spoil the joke. But the info card is so packed (Product type, product company, location of origin, advertising company, etc etc) and shown so briefly that I couldn't catch it all anyway.
Other memorable ones: (just a few, given that I've already mentioned a zillion :P)
- inlingua ad with quasi-English (and "bombastic sex!")
- One where the soccer team and the fans are nude, but the "streaker" is fully clothed. (don't you love commercials where you don't remember what the ad was for? :)
- IBM eBusiness ad:
Employee drinks from "Elixir of Business": "Our profits are down twenty percent in blahblah area because of this and this and this..."
Boss drinks from it: "Tastes like mango!!"
