They're likely serving compulsory national service, which for women in the IDF is 3 years in a combat-oriented job, or 2 in a non-combat job. These girls don't look much older than 18-21, so I'm guessing they are active duty, not yet old enough for the reserves. Even on down time and in civilian clothes the active duty soldiers stay armed.

And lugging an M16 around all day makes you hungry for mint chocolate chip.
