Network trouble

I completed the upgrades on my computer and things are truly groovy, with one exception. I'm having network trouble. Many web pages work fine, but certain other ones (like Livejournal) I can't get to at all and trying to download anything doesn't work. I can't even ping the web sites I can get to. At first I thought it was Comcast being Comcastic ( Read more... )

Hmm, let me see.. do I have a spare ethernet card... no, actually I'm afraid I only have about five or six of them right now.. would that do?

Seriously, you shoulda just called me :)

Those are really odd symptoms for a hardware issue, though..

I just picked one up at Fry's for 5 bucks on the way back from DVC. Still not fully up. It seems like the NIC is fully functional and detecting the physcial connection, but it's not getting an IP address. I tried a USB NIC that Joey has and got the same results. I'm thinking that this is probebly a problem with the router or Comcast buggered something up, maybe the IPs are MAC address linked and it won't release the one that I had.

This does seem like an odd hardware issue, but I've played with the drivers as much as I can and can't find anything. And when I was over picking up my mail, your dad reminded me that we had a simmilar problem a while back with some pages working and some not and such, that turned out to be with the router. I think it may have something to do with packet sizes.

Time to call Comcast and tell them "Yes I've rebooted, yes I've checked the cables, yes it's really turned on so stop reading that damn script and get me someone who knows what they're talking about." Not looking forward to that.

...When you have full access to the net again.

It's an interesting collection of facts, opinions, and predictions. While I don't agree with all of them, it's a good source of mental stimulation.

I check out Strategypage sometimes when I'm looking for answers to specific questions, but there is just too much wankery to read it regularly. There are only so many times I can read a discussion on 5.56mm vs 7.62mm or some basement dweller spouting off about why we really need to bring back the Iowa class battleships. And then there's the political crap "Oh noes the muslims are coming to take over the world!!!1!1one." Although the page you linked to seems to be much better than my previous experience with them.

I normally (when my connection isn't buggered) read Danger Room (http://blog.wired.com/defense/) for news on new military tech and such, it's a mixed bag and the comment section is a cesspit but that's to be expected. The guy who runs it used to run another one called DefenceTech for military.com, it's gone downhill with the new guy who took over but I still read it.

There's a reason I don't read the discussion/comment boards. Dunnigan and Bay's column pages, on the other hand, are usually interesting and literate, if not always in line with my view of the world.

Thanks for the link. I'll probably wander over and check out Danger Room the next time I'm on-line and bored.
