Post-war fic!

Jun 28, 2006 23:25

Well, the recent JKR interview was going to be the starting point for a discussion I've been having with myself about the various endings it's possible to have for favourite characters - do we always want the happy ending? However, I was then going to end up with a fic which has already taken me a ridiculously long time to finish, given that it was ( Read more... )

I like how...piece-y this piece is. No long, complicated backstory or sweeping, moral statement or over-simplification of after the war. It's jsut three people who were thrown together due to circumstances outside their control and who are trying to make the best of it. It feels like a touchstone, and as soon as I read this I started getting all kinds of wonderful before and afters going through my head. It's people being people, and that makes it perfect.
(Plus, Luna and Neville are spot on, and I do like your Theodore. Yay for non-icky Slytherins!)

Ooh, new commenter! Hallo, and thank you so much for your kind words. How did you find me? I hope you enjoyed your before and afters - I haven't decided on most of them myself, so feel free to make up whatever you like!

Theodore is being rather insistent at the moment, just as I'm meant to be writing for femgenficathon... I might well end up having to write more him soon. Yay for non-icky Slytherins, indeed. But very glad you thought Neville and Luna were in character. I hadn't tried writing them before.

Neville weekly newsletter or something like that. Ran a sarch on Alice/Frank cuz I'm weird like that, found the newsletter, and found your piece- which isn't Alice/Frank, but is very good regardless.

Best of luck with Theodore and the whole him not being properly female. =D

Mmm... magical theory, summer gardens and underused minor characters!

Not to imply that you under-use them! Everyone here is fully realised and standing firmly on their own to feet.

From Neville (always my favourite - well, i did get here from longbottom_wkly) and his quiet air of "feel the fear and do it anyway", to quite the best Luna i've seen (capturing that magnificently quirky and nonsequitorial air is quite beyond me!).

And even Theodore (whom i don't think i've ever read before) with his quiet interest in Luna's idiosyncrasies and his prickly, yet flourishing relationship with his host.

My favourite bit is:

“I wasn’t going to say that. Just that it’s rare she’s wrong about people she knows. I don’t pretend to understand what she’s going on about half of the time, mind - but that much I do. And she likes you. I said stay as long as you like, and I mean it. I'm glad of the company."

i can hear Neville in my mind's ear just perfectly from this (i always imagine him to have a thick Lancashire accent and this fits that to a tee).

Goodness. This longbottom_wkly thing is great - I don't often have new people turn up here and comment, and it's lovely! Thanks very much for reviewing so kindly (am quite sure that I don't deserve that compliment on my Luna, but it's much appreciated!) and so perspicaciously. I'm really pleased that you picked up the way that the Luna/Theodore friendship works. Am I really your first Theodore writer? What an honour!

And I definitely go for Lancashire Neville, too. My father was born there, but he's been so long in the Midlands that the edge has definitely rubbed off his accent, so I'm very glad that Neville's speech works for you.

longbottom_wkly is a godsend, in my personal opinion!

And no, take all compliments on your Luna (i'm currently in the middle of a Ron/Luna and am tearing my hair out over her!)

BTW: Mind terribly if i friend you? People with an interest in Hogwartian Warding and the specialist areas of House Elf magic are hard to come by.

I would be delighted if you friended me! You might, in fact, be the first person who's ever turned up here and wanted to after reading something of mine. Very exciting. I shall go and friend you forthwith, and try my best to supply enough House Elf magic to keep you happy...

Looking forward to seeing your Ron/Luna, then, when you've finished the hair-tearing!
