Katie sadly observed Reid packing up his suitcase.

“Did you use that checklist I made you?” she asked, holding her nearly year-old son Jacob against her hip.

He laughed. “Yes, mother, I did,” he replied sarcastically.

“Because I don’t want to be finding your dirty socks and undershirts all over the place for the next six months.”

“I’d come back for them!” Reid said.

“No… once you move out, you’re not going to miss me.”

He gave her a slight smile and embraced her in a hug. “It’s not like you can’t come visit whenever you want,” he said gently.

Katie let out a sigh. “I know. And I’m so happy for you. It’s just going to be lonely here without you.”

“I think there’s a pretty long list of people waiting to get in here. You have Liberty, who adores you, Hank will probably need the space the next time his lovely lady gets smart and kicks him out, then there’s Doogie Hughes…”

Katie giggled at the mention of his name. Reid smiled at her giddiness. As much as he hated the guy - Chris made Katie happy. Knowing he wasn’t about to leave Katie completely alone made Reid feel better about moving out. He wasn’t one to get close to just anyone, but over the past eight or so months, he had grown to care a lot about Katie and the kid.

He let out a sigh as he looked around his cleared out bedroom. “I think I’m ready,” he said. He looked Katie in the eyes. “I am ready,” he said more definitively.

“After all this time, you’re finally finding your way home,” Katie said, a tear coming to her eye.

“Let’s not get all weepy,” Reid said.

Katie let out a laugh. “Yes, sir,” she replied.

He kissed her on the cheek and picked up his suitcase, heading towards the door.

“Don’t forget to call when you’re all settled, okay? Jacob and I will come visit,” Katie said.

Reid nodded. “Will do.” He gave Jacob a smile and a wave. “Bye kid,” he said.

Jacob’s chocolate eyes lit up. “Bye-bye!” the child chirped.

“Bye!” Katie added.

Reid stepped outside and observed the trees’ changing leaves that were coming with autumn. This was his first September since med school that any change in his life was felt. For so long, his life had been work, work, work, as days stacked up to be months, and months became years, until the majority of his thirties passed him by without him even noticing. Not that he minded - his career depended on his devotion, and he had no problem committing himself 100%. It was a lonely life, sure, but that never bothered him. Until his arrival in Oakdale, he never had an opportunity to have much of a life outside of work. Most people ached for friends and a home. He had always had acquaintances and a house.

He walked through the door to his apartment and smiled. Everything was exactly as he remembered it. He plopped his suitcase beside him and took off his coat, slinging it over the nearest kitchen chair.

From the master bedroom came Luke, who smiled warmly at him. “Hey! Sorry I didn’t here you come in. I was putting away clothes. It’s perfect, isn’t it?” he asked, peering around.

Reid nodded. “It’s great. Nothing is perfect, Mr. Snyder. Except for me, of course,” he cracked.

“Are you surprised about the furniture being set up already? I hope you don’t mind I took it upon myself to arrange the kitchen and the living room. I didn’t want to leave you out of it, I just thought you’d be happy to see some of the work already done.” Luke said, looking apologetic.

Reid laughed. “Why are you explaining yourself? I love it. And, I didn’t want to tell you because I knew you’d be disappointed, but you somehow texted me the picture of the living room instead of Faith.”

Luke blushed. “Oh. Oops.”

“I loved it when I saw it, though, and it’s just the way I remember it.”

“Glad it’s up to your standards, Doc,” Luke replied.

“I said I love it, I didn’t say it was up to my standards. Much like you, Mr. Snyder,” Reid said, cracking a smile.

“Ha, ha, very funny,” Luke said, laughing. “How was Katie?”

Reid shrugged. “She’s upset I moved out, but she’ll be okay. I told her she and Jacob can come visit whenever they want. The drive from here to there is only ten minutes,” Reid said. “She doesn’t want to intrude, on us, I think, and that’s why she’s upset. She wants to let me leave the nest completely,” he mused.

“They can come over any time, absolutely,” Luke said.

“So can Noah,” Reid replied quickly. “I mean… I don’t want him to ever feel like he’s not welcome here.”

“I think he already knows that, but I’ll tell him you said that. I appreciate that you trust me to be friends with him.”

“I know you’re mine, Luke. I trust you. And I also know you’ll always care a lot about Noah. I’d never tell you that you couldn’t be around him. He’s your friend.”

Luke smiled. “You’re so cool sometimes, you know that?”

“Yup,” Reid said with a grin. He shuffled his feet, moving in closer to Luke. “I love you,” he said.

“I love you too,” Luke replied.

Their lips met, both forming slight smiles as they kissed. Their hands intertwined as they pulled apart, looking into each other’s eyes.

Reid realized that Katie was absolutely right. After all this time, he had finally found his way home.
