A Dream Fad

I told Pearl about a dream I had last night and she insisted that I blog about it:

In the drean, Pearl and I had recently learned about a new fad that was becoming popular across the country. People were breaking into other people's houses and raiding their kitchen's for light snacks. The sporting aspect was that you had to break into the house, fix a snack, consume it, clean up after yourself and get out before anybody caught you in the act.

We decided we would try our hands at the game. We were acquainted with a wealthy couple and we knew they were going to be out that evening. Since we knew the house and the people we figured this would be a fairly safe way to start.

As we were driving to their house (on a dried up river bed -- it was a dream after all) we passed them as they were heading away from their place. We hoped they hadn't seen us but also felt reassured that they would really be out.

The dream skipped over the break-in and continued with us preparing to eat some crackers and cheese. Just then the front door burst open and we were faced with the home owners.

The man started yelling at us about how they'd seen us on the road and figured they'd better turn around to check things out. He was saying something like, "What is the meaning of this outrage!"

Then his wife saw me holding a piece of cheese and said, "This is too funny, dear. They're "voegeling." (That was apparently the name of the fad.) Then the two started laughing.

It just so happened that they too were going out for a night of voegeling and they invited us to join them.

As the dream continued they took us from home to home, teaching us the rules of the game. We learned things like: never eat the last of something; even if something tastes great, only eat small portions; never steal or break anything and clean up after yourself..."

The consistency of the dream began to fall apart when my kitten -- which was sometimes a rabbit -- escaped in one house and we had to search all the cupboards to find it -- only to find it modeling for a local artist that did abstract paintings of nature -- and so on....

Pearl says the word voegel sounds like the German word for "bird." And that maybe the fad was like flitting from place to place eating like a bird. But, until she told me this, I knew no German at all so it was just a happy coincidence.

Anyway, I hope this fad never catches on. I don't mean I'm not willing to share my food with others. But if I never knew when guests would break in, I'd have to keep the house perfect all the time.
