As pilots we enjoy the challenge of flying. The desire and determination to look fate in the eye and do our best to match wits with it. We're not suicidal, we are careful and calculating. Balancing the risks against the potential rewards then acting on our judgments as best we can. The object is to out wit fate every time. It is not a game for the foolish and luck alone won't get you far.
When you're flying freight in Alaska, you are the lifeline for many of the communities in that remote and desolate region. They are depending upon you to deliver the goods, literally.
I don't consider your view grim, just realistic. You know what you're up against and I suspect you have the grit and determination to play the game... and win!
