Oh, I just love this. I love the layers of happiness and sadness and how, after so many years of not having to think and feel and act on their own, Whiskey/Claire and November/Madeline are struggling to be and feel "real" again. It's great, really, what you've done here. Thank you so much! ♥
I love Claire's internal monologue, equally bittersweet and bitter. You totally capture her voice and that frantic, post-Vows mindframe.
Like this line: "Maybe it’s because they have no small talk to make about television, or family, or their days at work, or maybe it’s years of long (and impossible! Topher shouts in her head, hopping from foot to foot, and she clenches her teeth and imagines yanking him out of her office by his annoying left ear) training as Dolls, but they chat about the relative merits of their smoothies."
I also kind of love how Claire and Madeline run into each other at the mall, of all places.
And that knife-in-the-heart ending? Killed me. In a good way.
What a very kind compliment, you know how I love my girl Claire.
I'm glad you thought the ending worked. I was kind of like "wow, a downer ending? For Dollhouse? Real original, P," but I didn't see much of a way around it.
I wanted to say again how much I love this fic. The dynamic between Madeline and Claire is resonant with all the unspoken issues beneath the surface. Everyone is lying, and everyone is trying so hard to pretend they are normal - it's heartbreaking.

I have to say, despite my love for both ladies, I never thought of putting them together! Thanks for the wonderful prompt.
