The only "tradition" we have is the "baby" inside the KING CAKE for Mardi Graus? *thinks*. Whoever gets the baby in their piece of cake provides next years cake.
Well, since Mardi Gras is the beginning of Lent and 'New Year' could be celebrated up to 2 February (Candlemass) at this time, there may well be some connection. The Lord of Misrule was often the youngest person at the feast (ie a baby or child) who was then proclaimed King in recognition that everything was topsy turvy on this day.
