There are a few facts about Damon Salvatore that Elena reminds herself of, every once in a while:
1.) He hurts people (e.g. Stefan).
2.) He'd be the worst boyfriend in the entire world (e.g. Caroline).
3.) He's impulsive to the point of psychosis (e.g. Jeremy).
4.) He is a terrible friend (e.g. her).
Usually, when Damon swings into her life like a comet, it's all trauma and bad news and deliciously sexy blues eyes and she has not trouble at all keeping her distance. But every once in a while, Elena feels herself getting drawn in to Damon and all his complexities and she forces herself to take a step back, to look at who he really is.
Elena Gilbert wears vervain around her neck and she's a clever girl; so her and Damon? Never, ever going to happen.
