Maybe she was stupid to fall into a love based on flimsy things like laughter and extra maple syrup and warm arms around you at night and butterflies in your stomach. She's usually more practical than that, and there's not much point in being starry-eyed during the apocalypse.
OH OUCH. OUCH OUCH. That hits me where it hurts. Especially since I've always been pretty meh on Fred/Gunn FOR THOSE REASONS, and now I'm all HMMMM.
Angelus bit her right where a knife slid, once upon a time, across Wesley’s neck. If she’d survived they’d have had matching scars, his and hers.
Don't make me cry.

He’s been there, done that. For a long time all he was was that. And that’s her too. And they can still bust a gut laughing at stupid in-jokes, and polish off two tubs of popcorn at an action movie, and try to get hotel hide-and-seek to catch on. (Angel, Cordy, and Wes still aren’t going for it. Lorne’s on the fence.)
Hotel hide-and-seek?! I love you for putting this beautiful idea in my mind because it is exactly the kind of thing that Fred and Gunn would be all giggly and enthusiastic about while everyone else just kinda looked at them strangely. Also, I love that you include Gunn's reflections on his own times fighting for his life. It really shows that he and Fred have a lot in common.
And there’s another splinter off that string of thought, a tiny unignorable crack: Wesley will be pissed about his friend ( ... )

I've been reading a lot about this show lately, and one comment that I've come across over & over is that lots of people felt Fred/Gunn didn't make any sense, in a 'Well, what would they have in common?' way. And my fangirly heart always gets kind of defensive at that remark, because I really buy them as being very happily crazy about each other, so I wanted to try to explore just what drew them together.
... but mostly I'm still just like "jadfklaj;l because they were SO CUTE that's why!!" Articulate, I am it!
And, man, healthy Wes/Fred is not, but it sure is fascinating to ponder the motivation there on both sides, especially Wesley's. Back when I was younger I used to love that ship for quintessential sappy 'they are so doomed and so sweet!' reasons, and now I still kinda love it, but more for 'it makes my brain go boom with the creepy and the fascinating and the pathetic!'-type reasons. I just think that any ship where the overtly romantic feelings first come out to play ( ... )
