With the new season upon us, and fandom all extra-enthusiastic, I figured now would be a great time for this. Because there can never be enough Downton Abbey fic, and there certainly isn't enough now!
our love was comfortable, and quite broken in: Carson& Mrs HugheshacashSeptember 27 2011, 07:21:04 UTC
Seconding mayonegg's suggestion :) but did find a mini-something tucked away in the corner of my harddrive - it's actually part of a wider collection here [http://downton-abbey.livejournal.com/158513.html#cutid1] but I liked this bit the best :)

You have never addressed her as anything other than ‘Mrs Hughes’; to your knowledge she has never spoken of you as other than ‘Mister Carson’. But, just in the same way as the Crawleys are the only family you have, Elsie Hughes, housekeeper at Downton, is the only wife you have.
It quite sneaks up on you, the fact that you actually do not mind this at all.
On the contrary, you find it quite pleasing.
Mrs Hughes is a good woman, in the same way that the air is good, or Downton is good. It is an unassailable fact of life. She puts up with no nonsense, not even from you. Her little moments of irreverence - ‘I will want to see the look on the old bat’s face!’ - quite from shocking you, actually make you

THERE ARE NO WORDS TO EXPRESS THE HEARTS IN MY EYES. ♥ This is SO CARSON and SO DELIGHTFUL and it totally makes me want to bounce around in an undignified fashion that would surely appall him, just like all their scenes together do.

:) Thankyou!
See, this is why I love Carson. Squeeing and fluff and romantic glee would all be so horrific to him; and yet it's all so wonderful between him and Mrs Hughes.
I don't care what actually happens on the show, in my mind Hughes and Carson end up retired together in a snug little cottage ♥

TRUTH ALL OVER; I will accept nothing else. :D Ahhh, bless them, they are like happiness's answer to The Remains of the Day, which is apparently something my emotional well-being really needed after The Remains of the Day.

Well anyone who saw episode four cannot deny the Carson/Hughes (Cughes? Harson?) love - the 'and he was horrible and fat and red faced and you couldn't think what you ever saw him?' was being followed inwardly by 'Please don't leave me! I need you to stay!'

Love this! The respect and affection they have for one another is so palpable on the show, and I've often mused on how they think about each other privately. This fits exactly and was great fun to read.

I love how you touch all the bases, here; they've got a good relationship as coworkers and as friends and people, and love has arisen from habit.
Also this? that small part of you that’s still Cheerful Charlie Carson.
We just need more of this all around. Everywhere.
