With the new season upon us, and fandom all extra-enthusiastic, I figured now would be a great time for this. Because there can never be enough Downton Abbey fic, and there certainly isn't enough now!

Robert stood there - rather pathetically, it has to be said, under the circumstances - and attempted to look manly and unafraid under the wilting stare of his wife. Behind the open door he could almost hear the servants gawping. Even Carson was unabashedly hovering. Only the loving (read: stern, arch, foretelling all sorts of doom and destruction to be wrecked upon his miserable person) gaze of his wife didn’t falter. “So,” Cora said slowly, beginning to pick bits of drying batter from her dressing-gown and hair, “you have flooded the kitchen, you have burnt the oven, you have assaulted me with pancake batter, you appear to have done unspeakable things with some eggs and bacon - I’m not a prying woman, as well you know, Robert, I feel it’s important that a man has a personal side to him that no-one else sees…but may I ask why?”
The Earl of Downton lowered his eyes, shuffled his feet, started a lot of sentences with hem hem! or well, you see…. Cora refused to budge. Finally, after much hem hem-ing, the mumbled word escaped:
”…Anniversary.”
“What? Robert, our anniversary was last month!”
“Yes but not,” he caught sight of several pairs of inquisitive eyes peering at him from behind the door, and plunged on regardless, “that’s not our proper anniversary darling, you know, not a meaningful one, it’s just the date of a day I signed a contract and walked up an aisle of a, let’s be frank, rather dreary old church.” As Cora stiffened, he shook his head

Thanks all :D because while Robert Crawley is a legend in so many different kinds of ways, the image of him flailing around desperately trying to make a cup of tea is so delightful.
