Adventuring for Ladies, Mary/Lavinia, 2/2oliveoylFebruary 24 2012, 17:57:13 UTC
Mary takes Lavinia’s hand and examines it. “Still stiff?”
“Not too awful. Nothing you need worry about,” she replies, smiling. She laces her fingers through Mary’s.
“You’d think, after all these years,” Mary begins, and then ceases. Lavinia prods her a bit with her foot. “Well. That it would be easier, being apart.”
Lavinia allows a tiny grin to creep onto her face. “Couldn’t sleep?”
“Not especially. A spare old bone like me? I need my hot-water bottle.” Mary places her other hand on top of their clasp and squeezes gently.
“Even if I’d come, I hardly expect they’d have put us in the same bedroom.”
“No, but I would have crept into yours, like a fiend in the night.”

OH DEAR GOD, CRYING FOREVERRRRRRRR. This is just -- the most beautiful thing -- of all the things -- and thank you for writing it because now it will always be the canon of my heart! The descriptions are so crisp and bright, and the idea of Mary with her BOOTS and Lavinia smelling of lavender and Earl Grey with forty years of adventures behind them, oh god! It simultaneously makes me want like six novels chronicling their adventurous history and leaves me blissfully content, because the sense of that history is just so whole and fond and wonderful here.
In short: THOU ART MY HERO.
(Also: all the lolz at Matthew's third attempt at a wife. NOW I JUST WANT TO SEE THE MYSTERIOUS UNBEARABLE AMELIA, MARY, AND LAVINIA ALL IN THE SAME ROOM.)

This is such a lovely comment!! I am glad I could make you happy when you regularly slay me with your writing and graphics and general awesome. I would also like those novels, but hopefully you will write them. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

FEELINGS, FEELINGS, FEELINGS IN MY HEART. Oh my god they are so, so perfect. Mary has aged perfectly into how I'd expect in this, and SHE TOOK OVER THE CAB AND THE CABBIE WAS IN THE BACKSEAT. And Lavinia being all understanding and knowing and lovely. And they're old and still together and Mary doesn't like Matthew's wife but teases about it being his third choice! Oh I just have all these feelings because this is perfect and they're so well characterised.
“Not especially. A spare old bone like me? I need my hot-water bottle.” Mary places her other hand on top of their clasp and squeezes gently. “Even if I’d come, I hardly expect they’d have put us in the same bedroom.” “No, but I would have crept into yours, like a fiend in the night.” “Golly,” Lavinia says. This whole exchange I can see so well, your language is perfectly chosen.
And just feelings over all of this because it's lovely.

Thank you so much!!! I had a lot of fun imagining what they'd be like. And I'm so glad you liked the bit you quoted, because I kind of love it too. GLAD I COULD GIVE YOU FEELS. Thank you for this lovely comment.
(okay I'm gonna go and start writing for a Mary/Lavinia prompt now instead of just leaving them)
