That's... it exactly. This is precisely the ficlet I was thinking of when I came up with the prompt. Perfect. Thank you.

Oooh, very nice. So concrete and yet so full of atmosphere. And now I'd rather like to try some squash bars.

(When I lived in Honduras, there were all sorts of candied fruits for sale that I'd never seen in the states - packages of little candied tamarind squares, etc. There was one, though, that the housemate and I couldn't place for the longest time. Until we realized from taste and texture both that it was clearly candied squash.)

I think squash bars could work; in fact, any of these 'recipes', though I don't like beer so I'm not wild about that idea. Squash = delicious.

¡Yay! I do relate! I'm thinking of canning days back in Grandma's kitchen...

Well done!

This is really great. You've really got the voice, and the ending is perfect.

Oh, I like! Perfect! All visceral and angsty.

Also, it makes me want to go cook the butternut squash I just brought home from safeway. Which slightly irrational at 9pm...

eta: grumble. New commenting format won't let me use the html I want to use. Very annoying!

Grr, posting changes. But I'm glad you like the ficlet. Maybe save the squash for tomorrow? (Which is probably today by now...)

You had me with the first line. And thinking of Jayne and his hat, I reckon I can see the rest, too.
Very nice.

*g* The first line is beer_good_foamy's prompt but it spoke to me too and I knew I'd come back and write for it.
