Here is the Head Canon Meme, borrowed from st_aurafina, and used even though I haven't been doing much fandom stuff lately, because I actually really miss the fandom stuff.

Captain Archer? Has he always had dogs?

The Archer family go in for traditions in a big way. They have a long and proud history of service in the field of space endeavour, going back almost before there was a space service to serve in. And they have always kept beagles. Porthos is a direct descendent of John Glenn's dog "Sparky", and his forebears have been Archer pets for generations.

Jonathan Archer is always keen to do what's right, and for him keeping a beagle is just the right thing to do.

His wild-child sister Vivien was always a bit of a rebel, and once forgot herself so far as to keep a bassett hound. She also ran off and joined the Tax Office, where she is doing rather well. He doesn't talk about her much.
