Well, I haven't self-published anything (yet), but I disagree. I think it all depends on what you want from what you write. If being published by the "big guys" is the end-all-be-all for you as a writer, then so be it. That's what you aim for. Not everyone feels that way, however, and other writers are entitled to other opinions

I see your point of view around a lot. I don't understand it. I cannot comprehend it. If someone really wants to self-publish their work, then good for them. They obviously believe it's good enough to sell; let them do it.
But my point of view isn't that NOBODY SHOULD EVER SELF PUBLISH EVER. That was the whole part about "it's their decision, fair enough". Some people self-publish because that's really all they want from it, and that's fine. I'm not talking about them.
The people I'm talking about are the people who will back you into a corner if they can get you alone long enough and deliver a diatribe about how "editors just don't understand my vision and the publishing industry is an evil corporation just trying to keep the man down, and traditionally published authors are just their mindless puppets", or "I am a true artist and have vision and no art is beyond my creative abilities and I train myself to see the whole rather than the parts of a unified entity, are that makes me a far better artist than those who fail at seeing

That will teach me to reply to something before I have a cup of tea... I see your point. Bad apples. Yes. Thanks for taking the time to reply in a civilized manner, because I'm sure some people wouldn't have. :)
Hey lady, I'm so freaking happy to hear that you're working on a new novel. You know, your work holds a special place in my heart. I loved loved LOVED...um, the title escapes me right now, but you know what book I'm talking about, right? First in a planned trilogy? Huge, unexpected twist at the end? Very fairy tale-esque. LOVED. Still love, though it's been some years since I read it. (Long enough for the title and character names to escape me, even though they're right...on the tip of my brain!) I can't imagine how much I'd love whatever you're working on now, with the intervening years of time and experience behind you.
Anytime you need/want a beta reader, I'm always available for you, just so you know. :D
Cause *cough* if I ever see Gryphonia Sparklepants selling books on amazon, I am so buying them now. Just FYI.

I am definitely glad I have people to kick me if I ever thought about doing something silly writing wise (like self-publish a fiction novel).
It's almost sad to watch people who just have no clue.
