I have to seriously disagree with you here. Separate but equal is not equal. Marriage should be left as a religious institution but unfortunately, it has legal ramifications that a Civil Union can not and does not address. Here is a small list:

Civil Unions only work in a single state where it is enacted.
Married partners can transfer assets between them without federal tax penalties, Civil unions aren't recognized by the federal government therefore there is no provision for such transfers

In short, they should amend Civil Unions so that they have the same benefits for everyone and abolish marriage in terms of what is provided by the government. If people want a marriage, that should be up to their church or chapel to provide as a celebration of the civil union.

That is pretty much what I was trying to say, that every one has a right to get married (so to speak), and that the religious part of it is just a ceremony

What I suggested was something I'd thought of long and hard as a good compromise for everyone. I'm not that religious myself, yet I can understand where religious folks are coming from. My suggestion really satisfies the separation of church and state doctrines as well.
