WWPV is the local college radio station. I usually enjoy listening to them, but one time the DJ was so incompetent, he broadcast nearly a minute of dead air, interrupted at the twenty-second mark by the words "dead air." Tonight they found me this, which touches my Western heart.

They also play a lot of Crystal Castles.

I was heavily involved in college radio. I may have done this once or twice myself. I certainly knew other people who had.

I did college radio too, and a little dead air never hurt anyone, but this guy knew he was broadcasting dead air, and once he realized it was going on too long, he was just all, "LOL, dead air," and kept doing it.

Although I suppose I prefer him to the guy doing the Beatles retrospective on Saturday, who would talk over the songs' intros to say unbelievably inane things, like, "wow, you know, this song is like totally even more amazing than the last song; the Beatles were geniuses; oh, listen to this next part."

Interrupting it with "dead air" at least shows some arch self-consciousness mixed with unapologetic incompetence. Interrupting it with "uh" every 15 seconds, as did some DJs I knew, is just unapologetic incompetence, unmixed with levity.I prefer him to the guy doing the Beatles retrospective on Saturday, who would talk over the songs' intros to say unbelievably inane things, like, "wow, you know, this song is like totally even more amazing than the last song; the Beatles were geniuses; oh, listen to this next part."

Pretty much. If I wanted to hear someone inanely talking over a song, I'd listen to corporate radio.
